Fair at Best.......Think Twice about this hotel...

We stayed at Sunscape Sabor May 18th – May 25th. We booked this hotel knowing that they would be completing remodeling about 1 month before we got there. We didn’t see any construction going on at the resort. We usually stay at Iberostar when we go to Cozumel, but they were having a DEAL for this resort and we decided to try it. Was it worth it????? Maybe????? We booked an Ocean Front Room and were very happy that we upgraded to ocean front. We had room # 3121. The room was nice and had plenty of room of us and all our dive gear. The bathroom was a little tight with the door placement, but it was a nice bathroom. For some reason, they didn’t give us shampoo & conditioner every day. We didn’t have HOT water the first day we were there. A call to the front desk and we did get it. Some days, you just had to turn on the hot water and wait…….sometimes you got warm water and sometimes you didn’t. Most days we didn't. They also didn’t fill our mini-bar every day, they would leave us bottled water, but not the beer or soda. They only filled it 3 times while we were there. I did call the front desk and they would just bring me water…….We had lots of water . The resort is very beautiful. The beach can’t be beat. Much better than Iberostar. Yes it is rocky, just make sure you bring your water shoes. Snorkeling was very good and we saw lots of wildlife in the swimming area. The beach is the best part of this place. So now to the sulfur smell. Yes we did smell it. Not in our room. There seems to be certain areas where you can smell it. Walking to dinner to Portofino, there was an area where you could smell the sulfur. I wouldn’t have wanted a room in that area. We also smelled the sulfur a couple of times when we were rinsing the sand off our feet by the beach shower. So now to the food and drinks. The bars were very good. You could always get a drink and the bartenders were good. The food was not even fair……..breakfast was good, lots of things to choose from. Lunch was ok. The buffet was open and the seaside grill had good snacks. The guacamole was very good and the cook was very nice. Dinner is another matter……very limited and NOT very good. You only had 2 options for dinner. They DID NOT open everything for dinner, even though they resort was pretty full. And the website says you have the option of 5 restaurants for dinner. We were told the pizza place, De Mario, would be opening while we where there, but it never opened. They would open Portofino or El Patio and then the Market Café or the seaside grill. We had fair dinners at Portofino & El Patio, they were very slow. We thought that when the Market Café was open that it would be a buffet, but it was not. It was just 5 different dinners and they had the exact same things the next night when the seaside grill was open. Meat, potatoes, vegetables and rice. They should have had a buffet as an option. Friday night, they had a Mexican buffet and it was good. I just wish they would have had that another night. The same food every night got a little old.

I just came back from a stay at this hotel. I read all of the reviews and was concerned with some of them. I would like to be clear...this is an outstanding place with outstanding staff. Everything was absolutely excellent. The rooms are comfortable and clean. If you need something, they bring it immediately. The food is quite good and there is more than enough to choose from. Again, if you want something, they will even get it for you. An example: They had a buffet for Christmas that was quite nice, however, I did not eat the food that they were serving because I am almost vegetarian. I requested fish for me and chicken for my wife, neither of which was on the buffet. They went out of their way to make it and bring it to us. There is plenty to do...we went sailing, canoeing, and slept out by the beach and pool. Both were in excellent shape. There is food and a bar to get food and drink by both. If you are going as a couple, do the "romantic dinner". Ours was in the gazebo and they did an outstanding job. And we came back to a room with candles and rose petals. The only issue is the reliability of Wi-Fi, which is in and out at most times. But seriously, if I did not have to do work there, it would not have been an issue. After all, who does work when you go to Cozumel anyway? Seriously, forget any bad reviews you may read because they are utter nonsense and I just got back. I will go there again and again and you should do so yourself.

overall experience

We went the week of Sept 8th, 2013. This was considered off season, the place seemed deserted which we loved. But a great hotel, rooms a bit damp but that’s the humidity. Several restaurants were not opened, bit of a nuisance, always going to the same place for breakfast, lunch and dinner. But the food was great, wait staff excellent!! Great presentations, creative desserts, great omelets. We didn’t like that they served just one beer, mixed drinks were great. Take your mug, they’ll fill ‘em up. Snorkeling was great for first timers. We could just walk off the beach, into the water and see stingrays, fish, etc. Clear water, we were out all day long snorkeling. Cost was about $15 for a taxi to downtown shopping, great bar hangouts there, $15 bucks back. I would definitely go back.

Wonderful Mini Moon

Let me start with the positive - the resort and the scenery were beautiful. The sunsets were to die for! We snorkled on the first day that we were there. It would have been nice to be able to rent the snorkle gear for 24hrs since they close at 4pm. The swing bar was fun and in a good location. The resort is currently building a swim-up bar but does not have one at this time as advertised. The food was pretty good - I am gluten free so had a few limitations but not many. One of the restaurants for the evening dinner actually had gluten free options listed. I was impressed with that! I think the best meal of the day there is breakfast. I wasn't too impressed with the snacks: nachos, quesadillas, hot dogs and hamburgers. There were two dining options for dinner that alternated being open. El Patio and their Italian restaurants. The rooms were comfortable - we had the junior suite, a good view of the ocean and a king size bed. They did well cleaning the rooms and such. I wish they had more bottled water! They give you 4 upon check-in 2 in the bathroom and 2 in your fridge. Then only two for the remaining days. I was happy to know that they had a separate water filtration system for the water served in glasses when dining. I wouldn't advise drinking the water out of the tap, but I don't think it was dangerous. One note - the airport transportation was fine. We had a semi-difficult time tracking down the correct person to get back to the airport. All worked out fine but there are several people at the resort and airport trying to sell you something! We rented a scooter to go around the island. It was awesome. I would definitely recommend that but make sure you know how to drive one! The other side of the island from the resort has white sandy beaches and there's hardly anyone in sight! The sand is more fine and it's really really beautiful! Get out and about if you can!!
