Sunscape 1/21 through 1/26

This property is currently being renovated in stages. The Pelican and Flamingo wings have been completed, while other phases are scheduled during the 2013 calendar year. We stayed in the Flamingo (Building 8) which was quiet and exceeeded our expectations. The restaurants were very good with adequate selections. The bar services were exceptional, but bring your own cup since their glass sizes are relatively small. The staff was willing to accommodate you and your needs to the best of their abilities. The beach and pools were clean and offered excellent views with a variety of options. This resort was a value since renovations are being conducted throughout the resort. This is why the resort was a deal in terms of price and all-inclusive accommodations. If you are patient and considerate, the staff will attempt to meet your needs to the best of their abilities. Always treat others as you would expect to be treated.

Sunscape was a great place

Overall it was a very good place. If you're looking for a 5 star resort, this isn't the place however if you can roll with some things, it's great. The service was fantastic, especially at the bars. Gigio and Norma have to be the happiest and most polite people on the planet. I didn't see a single person tip a bartender except for me. Possibly as a result I NEVER had to wait for a drink and they made them anyway I wanted them. If I wanted my 22 oz thermal cup filled with half rum and half daquiri, they did it. The theme restaurants were very good. The buffet had a problem with the food not being hot. In general the hotel staff really did go the extra mile. Ask for the Pelican bldg. It's been totally renovated and they upgraded me from garden view to ocean view for free. The refrigerator either didn't work after 2 days or island temperature was around 60 degrees. It never was what we Americans would call cold. Didn't matter to me. The beach was nice. Beach towels run out very early like around 9-10 AM as well as shaded beach chairs. When going downtown it's very easy to use the bus vs. taxi. The bus was $1.50/person and it's the same vehicle as a taxi. If you have an early AM flight, don't depend on the staff for a wakeup call and allow at least an extra hour for the staff to try to get you a taxi at 5 AM. My taxi from the airport to the hotel was $35 and from the hotel to the airport was $12.50/person. The entertainment in the early evening was good. Good DJ's, bands, and singers until about 10 PM. Hardly anyone dances but it is what you make of it. The casino is very old and has nothing to do with the hotel. They give you 2 free drinks/room/day. Most slots are 20 yrs old. Who cares, they still pay. There is no waiters etc on the beach so you have to get your own drinks. Wait service around the main pools was excellent, especially with a tip. With a tip, your cup is never empty. I noticed that without a tip you could be waiting for awhile. Not many Americans at this resort and probably in Curacao which is why I went. Much cheaper than Aruba and mostly as good. One last tip. Pack what you need for one or two days in your carry on luggage because with American Airlines my check in luggage did not make it until 27 hours later and I was told that is common. Although this is a family place, there really were not that many children. All in all it was a very good experience and I would do it again. If you are a whiner, you might not like this place as well as many other places.

Love Curacao!!

Went for 5 days/4 nights at the Sunscape resort. Staff was amazing, so happy and friendly and helpful. Resort was beautiful. Food was good. All in all an amazing and relaxing vacation that exceeded our expectations in almost every way. The only slight drawback was that the "minibar" was severly lacking. Luckily I predicted this and bought liquor from the duty free on the way in. The minibar consisted of 2 mini bottles of Amsel Light, a bottle of diet coke, a bottle of sprite and a OJ juice box. It was nice to have mixers in the room, but a couple more beers or some nips of liquor would have been nice considering the minibar was used as a selling point. Couple tips: buy liquor from the duty free if you like to party so you have it in the room. Their selection is very limited, mostly rum/whiskey/frozen drinks and only Amstel beer and all bottom shelf stuff. Get to the restaurants early to get a pager (7pm ideally), otherwise you will get turned away because they fill up quickly. Don't pay extra for airport transportation as the Sunscape provides a shuttle that is quick and easy and free. Don't expect to have cell service. You have to pay 40 bucks to get internet for the week, your cell won't work there for email or calls or anything. Overall we had an amazing time and would recommend the Sunscape 100%.

Curacao Paradise Island

The Sunscape Curacao Resort, Spa & Casino exceeded our expectations. We wanted an all-inclusive tropical vacation that would allow us to snorkel and bask in the sun all day long and we received that and more. The rooms were clean and comfortable. Our patio was less than 100 feet from the beach, private, and we heard very little noise from the surrounding rooms. The snorkeling was amazing. We saw dozens of different kinds of tropical fish and were able to snorkel from dawn until dusk right from our room. We brought our own snorkel gear, but the hotel does provide some free of charge for an hour’s use. There is a rock barrier that serves as a breaker from the ocean waves giving you a 200 by 1000 feet or so snorkeling area. They had kayaks, paddle boats, and wind surfing available, but the best was the Hobie Kat rides. They took us out for a short ride into the ocean waves. We really enjoyed that! Resort also had scuba diving but we didn't partake in that. The snorkeling was plenty to keep us entertained. Sunscape had 5 or so different restaurants, including the Oceania, a Buffet, Japanese, and Italian. The Oceania chicken sandwich prepared by Hardai was our favorite for lunch. Hardai made us a wonderful little lunch while Norma kept the drinks full. We did the Japanese dinner our last evening there and enjoyed an entertaining show while Elie prepared a Japanese feast right at our table. The food was by far one of the best parts of the Sunscape Resort. One of the reasons we chose Sunscape was because it mentioned teen activities. They had a very nice game room and tried to keep teens and families engaged with activities, but we didn't see a lot of other families. Mostly couples with a few families mingled in but they definitely did their best to keep the kids engaged. They had a large sized chess board, shuffle board, and volleyball daily. We would definately visit the Sunscape in Curacao again!

What's to Love

Red carpet check-in at Sunscape Curacao while relishing welcome treats like chocolate chip cookies or frozen pops.

Delicious treatments like strawberry hydrating facials and chocolate mani/pedis. Yum.

The luscious body wraps (for those who don't want to be tempted with naughty, sugary treatments).

The casino (adults-only) with over 300 slot machines and games (if you get too sun burned & wanna cool off).

Cool, exercise-y stuff to check out like a rock climbing wall and Sumo wrestling.

You can learn Papiamentu - a language that is mix of Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, English and French.

60 pristine, world-renowned diving sites. Here, you can really make a splash. (Ba dum dum).

Getting to feed turtles, sharks, stingrays, plus a dolphin experience at Sea Aquarium Park.

What We'd Change

The shore is close to the hotel, so you won't take long walks through the sand to get to the ocean. But if taking long walks on the beach is your thing, you can always walk along the shoreline.

Why You Should Go

It's just 10 miles away from the airport. Woot!

The Sun Club, a family-centric program with everything from room upgrades to cartoons in the rooms.

The island is outside of the hurricane belt, so it's good to visit year-round.

It's two miles away from Willemstad, where you can enjoy world-class shopping along with historic sightseeing (if you're into that kind of thing).

Golf is available at the nearby Blue Bay Golf Course and there are two lit tennis courts.

The beach is close to the hotel, so no long trek to reach the ocean.

Eco-adventure tours are available. Bring your bug spray, just in case.
